Greens NSW MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has responded to yet another morning of cancelled services on Sydney Trains, saying this clearly exposes the Government’s neglect of the public transport people take day in and day out.
Dr. Faruqi said:
“This Government brought in the new timetable for political brownie points, but this has really backfired. The public and Sydney Trains workers are now feeling the brunt of this Government’s extensive neglect of the system. They know full well that demand has been increasing and investment is desperately needed.
“Patronage has gone up a whopping 20% on some lines in just one year, while the Government has failed to invest in increasing staff numbers to match the increasing demand.
“There’s no two ways about it, this Government has failed to invest in Sydney Trains despite dire warnings of the system being at the verge of collapse. The Minister blames patronage increase as if all of these commuters have appeared out of thin air. This is a disaster of their own making, and the least the Liberals can do is own up to it.
“The Government has stretched Sydney Trains to the limit, which means there is absolutely no flexibility left in the system to cope with any contingency. This is a systemic failure and is an unacceptable way to run such a vital public service that millions of Sydneysiders rely on.
“The Government has starved Sydney Trains of both funding and the needed staff and expertise. Chaos is expected when you hollow out the public sector, and get rid of experts who should be there precisely to prevent such meltdowns,” she concluded.
