Greens NSW Environment Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has said that NSW faces the same environmental catastrophes as Queensland if they don’t reverse course on land clearing laws. Reports today have revealed that loose land clearing regulations in Queensland has seen the destruction of 10 square kilometres of trees every day, or around 395,000 hectares of land in 2015-16. This rate is up by a third on the previous year. Almost half the area cleared was in river catchments near the Great Barrier Reef,
Dr Faruqi said:
“The evidence from Queensland shows that loosening land clearing laws unleashes an epidemic of land clearing. Premier Berejiklian is sitting on a climate timebomb.
“Three years ago, Queensland weakened its native vegetation protections and the result has been environmental carnage. New South Wales is staring down the barrel of this same future.
“These laws are only a few months old so there is still time to reverse course and commit to protecting and enhancing our environment.
“Greenlighting the destruction of native vegetation across New South Wales will be a climate catastrophe and make a complete mockery of any commitment to combating climate change.
“Just a few weeks ago, the NSW Government with their anti-environment allies in the Shooters Party and Christian Democrats voted down my attempt to reverse their land clearing laws. When Parliament resumes, I will be moving again to fix their biodiversity offsets mess. I urge them to listen to the evidence, it’s not too late yet” she concluded.
