Greens MP and Animal Welfare spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has criticised the NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro, for suggesting that a new greyhound racing track should be built in Queanbeyan
Dr. Faruqi said:
“After all the evidence of animal cruelty and the deaths of thousands of racing dogs, it is bizarre that the NSW Deputy Premier thinks a greyhound racing track should be built in Queanbeyan. What a slap in the face to the community who desperately need better health care and education, not a hand out to the gambling industry.
“The ACT Government knows this industry stinks and that is why they are shutting it down. The ACT has the courage of its convictions, unlike the cowardly NSW Government. ‘
“The Government is already throwing $45 million of taxpayer’s money to gambling as part of its backflip on greyhound racing in the state, so how many more millions will we have to stump up to subsidise an entirely new track?
“No matter what window dressing the Government puts on greyhound racing, there will still be animal cruelty and hundreds of dogs killed each year for the sake of a bet. The only sensible option is to shut it down, not subsidise it”, she concluded.
