Greens NSW MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC has reacted to reports that White Bay in Sydney’s inner west and parks on the north shore have been earmarked as construction sites for the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link toll road, which will require the disposal of more than 500,000 cubic metres of contaminated sediment.
Dr. Faruqi said:
“Dumping hundreds of thousands of tonnes of contaminated soil in to White Bay and in parks all round Sydney will be a disaster, especially for such a terrible project that really just benefits this Government’s toll road agenda.
“Sydney is becoming a snarled mess of toll roads that deliver nothing but more congestion, smoke stacks spewing pollution, and an ever increasing toll on people who have no alternative. They’re willing to push up to 70 threatened species towards extinction to satisfy their narrow toll roads agenda. This government’s obsession with toll roads has really reached its peak.
“The Wester Harbour tunnel and Beaches Link will be both an environmental and transport planning disaster. Again, no public transport alternatives have been considered and this obstinate Liberal-National Government is bulldozing through the planning process. The only information the public gets is through leaked documents, and the cost-benefit analysis is nowhere to be seen.
“With this plan to dump contaminated soil on to parks and playgrounds, this Liberal-National government has literally hit rock bottom for transport and environmental planning in NSW,” she concluded.
