A GIPA by NSW Greens MP and Spokesperson for Transport, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has revealed the NSW Government deliberately ignored repeated requests by State Transit Authority to improve bus services, including in Region 6 (Inner West), before announcing the privatisation of Inner West buses.
Dr. Faruqi will be questioning Transport Minister Andrew Constance in Budget Estimates at 2pm today at NSW Parliament House.
Dr Faruqi said:
“The fact is that the Minister knew exactly what measures he could take to fix the problems but he ignored repeated requests by the STA to do so, and intentionally let the suffering of commuters continue so he could justify privatisation.
“The fact that this Government has deliberately ignored recommendations by STA to improve performance clearly exposes their agenda of privatisation and their long term plan to sell off publicly operated transport in NSW wherever it is politically palatable.
“The Minister needs to clarify what steps were taken by Transport for NSW to fix issues he has raised as justification for privatisation of Inner West buses. It appears they altogether refused to even consider STA requests for much needed improvements to performance and reliability.
“It’s been almost five years since new timetabling technology was introduced in Liberal electorates, while buses in other regions have been purposely neglected to make way for privatisation. Are they running this experiment to punish people for not voting Liberal?
