NSW Government must focus on local roads, curb appetite for toll roads
NSW Greens MP and spokesperson for Roads, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has called on the NSW Government to abandon its obsession with toll roads and adequately fund local government to maintain local roads following an NRMA report showing a $2 billion dollar backlog, much of which in Western Sydney.
Dr Faruqi said:
“I’m hoping that this report jolts the Government out of its obsession with toll roads and into action on improving local roads.
“The NSW Liberal/Nationals are spending $45 billion and counting on their motorway madness obsession. If they spent even just 5% of this budget on local roads we could clear this backlog straight away.
“It is particularly galling that local roads in Western Sydney are the most in need of repair when they are the communities now being forced to pay tolls.
“The cost shifting of local road maintenance onto local councils has been going on for decades under both Labor and Liberal Governments. These are the roads that connect communities so we need to ensure they are properly maintained and safe” she concluded.
