NSW Greens MP and Animal Welfare spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has commented on the overturning of NSW’s greyhound racing ban in NSW Parliament.
Dr Faruqi said
“The spineless Liberal and Nationals and the political opportunists in the Labor party have combined to overturn the greyhound racing ban, even after all the evidence that this industry cannot be reformed.
“The industry cannot and will not comply with the law. It is an industry based on lying, cover ups and animal abuse. Even with the threat of closure dangling over their heads, the deaths have continued, the drugging has continued and the cheating has continued. Now, the industry can’t afford to meet even basic animal welfare provisions so the begging bowl is out and the taxpayer has to step in to the tune of $41 million.
“This law is a marginal improvement on the current mess of greyhound cruelty but it won’t stop the deaths. Most of the animal welfare measures promised are not in the bill. The Government even voted against my amendments to close these loopholes and strengthen the legislation.
“If there is one thing the greyhound racing industry has proven it is that it knows how to evade the law and how to pressure weak governments and opposition parties to not hold it accountable.
“The overturning of the ban is a textbook example of the capitulation of this government to vested interests and in particular of the shallowness of the Berejeklian Government. This has been all about serving internal party constituencies and has been completely devoid of principle.
“Labor’s hypocrisy on animal welfare has been exposed and Luke Foley can add a notch to his belt that he managed to overturn what could have been the most significant animal welfare reform in NSW, one that could have reverberated across the nation.
“This is undeniably a huge setback for animal welfare in Australia. But we will continue to expose every scandal and the continued killing of dogs. This industry is going to collapse – it is only a matter of time. People do not want animals to be killed for the sake of a bet” she concluded
