Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, a member of the NSW Parliamentary Working Group on Assisted Dying, has cosponsored the introduction of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017 into NSW Parliament.
The Greens have long had the right to Voluntary Euthanasia as a policy and will vote to support the bill. Dr Faruqi is urging the community to contact MPs to express their support.
Dr Faruqi said:
“I am so proud to be part of the NSW Parliamentary Working Group on Assisted Dying, including members of the Labor, Liberal, National parties and an independent that have introduced the bill into Parliament today.
“The bill has been carefully crafted and contains significant safeguards to protect vulnerable members of our community.
“We see voluntary assisted dying frameworks operating effectively in many places overseas including parts of the United States and Europe. There is no reason why NSW can’t follow in their footsteps.
“I have been inundated with stories of people who are suffering as well as family members who have watched their loved ones experience extreme and untreatable pain at the end of their life. The Greens believe it is inhumane to force people to suffer at the end of their life and strongly support this important bill.
“We are the closest we have ever been to making the right to voluntary assisted dying a reality. Now is the time to call MPS, write to them and meet them to show your support for the right of terminally ill people, who are in severe pain, to die with dignity, if they choose to do so” she concluded.
