Greens NSW MPs are calling on Premier Gladys Berejiklian to come to the negotiating table with rail workers and the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU). All Greens MPs in NSW have signed a statement in support of the RTBU’s right to take industrial action (attached).
Greens NSW MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has said the Government needs to engage in genuine and respectful negotiations with rail staff and their representatives.
Dr. Faruqi said:
“Premier Gladys Berejiklian must show leadership at this crucial moment and come to the negotiating table in good faith. The Government needs to engage in sincere and respectful negotiations with the workers and their representatives, listen to their concerns, and provide fair and improved working conditions and wages. Deficiencies in the new timetable must also be addressed.
“Transport workers deserve much better than to be scapegoated by this Government for their lack of investment in our trains and required staff. In fact, when resources have been stretched to the limit, it is the rail staff who have been working overtime to keep our trains running safely and reliably and it’s time for the Government to acknowledge this.
“Transport workers provide an enormously important service to our communities and deserve to be treated with respect, not with the arrogance that has been shown by Minister Constance.
“We support transport workers’ right to take industrial action and to strike if that is what it takes to bring this Government into a genuine negotiation,” she concluded.
