Transport workers provide a vital service to our communities and deserve to be treated with respect, listened to and get a fair and equitable wage rise. Premier Gladys Berejiklian must come to the negotiating table in good faith with the rail staff.
Services and staff have been under pressure and stretched to their limit by this Government’s refusal to provide adequate funding and operational staff to Sydney Trains. In the last four years, there has been only a slight increase in train crew, which is completely inadequate to meet the needs of the hundreds of new services that have been added since that time.
Despite being overstretched, transport workers have been working hard to make sure our train services keep running day in and day out and the public is not inconvenienced. It’s time for the Government to listen to the workers who keep our transport systems running for the millions of commuters in NSW. They deserve much better than being blamed for the lack of investment in Sydney Trains by this Government.
The Greens will always support the right of workers to organise and take industrial action. We urge the Premier to intervene and address the deficiencies in the train network and new timetable, and immediately engage in a genuine and respectful consultation process with transport workers and their representatives to address their concerns and provide fair and improved working conditions and wages.
