Greens NSW Animal Welfare Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has said that the Government must not give the greyhound racing industry one cent if it is intent on lifting the ban on greyhound racing. The Daily Telegraph has reported that the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party and the Christian Democrats are demanding massive taxpayer subsidies for the industry or they will block the repeal bill.
Dr Faruqi said:
“Any public money given to greyhound racing would be a reward for the killing of tens of thousands of greyhounds and for a culture of cover up and secrecy.
“Even one cent of public money for the cruel sport of greyhound racing to continue would be completely unacceptable.
“Giving the industry one hundred and fifty million dollars of blood money to allow them to continue would be absolutely appalling. If you are going to let dog racing continue, for God’s sake don’t let it be on the public purse. If the racing industry can’t afford animal welfare measures, they simply shouldn’t race.
“Let me be clear – the Greens absolutely oppose the reintroduction of greyhound racing in NSW. It has been shown to be a cruel and deceptive industry that has resulted in the death and injury of tens of thousands of greyhounds.
“Giving public money to continue greyhound racing, especially against the advice of their own regulatory panel, would be yet another backflip. I think people would be genuinely horrified to see a backroom deal for taxpayers to fund animal cruelty.
“The plan to repeal the greyhound racing ban and ignore the Special Commission of Inquiry that revealed the horrific amount of animal abuse is bad public policy. Premier Berejiklian must commit to keeping the ban” she concluded.
