Greens NSW MP and Environment Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, is urging the Independent Planning Commission to reject the Western Sydney Incinerator. Dr Faruqi attended the public hearing today at Rooty Hill RSL with members of the local community opposed to the incinerator.
Dr Faruqi said:
“This gigantic, toxic garbage incinerator has been now been knocked back by the community, a NSW parliamentary inquiry, the Department of Planning, the NSW EPA and NSW Health. I hope after hearing from experts and the community today, the independent planning commission will drive the final nail in the coffin of this incinerator.
“The community has been in a David and Goliath battle against the huge waste company pushing this incinerator, when the Government should have rejected it outright on health and environmental grounds.
“We are at the final stages of getting rid of this incinerator proposal, which is a testament to the courage of the people that created this massive community movement.
“The Greens are proud to have supported the community since the very beginning and it is great to see the other parties wake up and take notice. An incinerator burning waste is not clean, green renewable energy. It pollutes the air and is a health risk to communities. It should not be built in Western Sydney or in anyone’s backyard.
“The proponent claims that this is a solution for the waste crisis, but this is plainly wrong. We must focus on avoiding and reducing waste in the first place. We have a good opportunity to set up a sustainable recycling industry in New South Wales,” she concluded.
