Greens Criticise Labor for Push to Delay Container Deposit Scheme
29 November 2017
Greens NSW Environment Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has criticised the NSW Labor Opposition for calling for a delay in the Container Deposit Scheme which is due to begin this week. The Greens agree that the NSW Government has botched the roll out, but the scheme must be fixed, not delayed.
Dr Faruqi said:
“Labor’s call to delay the Container Deposit Scheme is really disappointing. They want to proverbially kick the can down the road to make it a political issue. There is overwhelming support for the scheme and our environment, rivers and oceans can’t wait any longer.
“Instead of delaying the scheme, it needs to be urgently fixed. Minister Upton must be held accountable for this mess. If the companies they’ve chosen can’t run it effectively and roll out the collection points in time, take the contract away and give it to an independent third party organisation with representation from industry and environment groups, like the Greens have been saying since the beginning.
“With Labor’s calls to delay the scheme egged on by Alan Jones, there is a real risk that a spineless government might backflip yet again. We cannot allow this to happen.
“The NSW Government has botched the rollout by refusing to listen to experts and the community. We moved amendments to force retailers to be involved in the scheme but the Government voted them down. We warned them not to allow the big beverage companies to run the scheme. Now we see a situation where there not enough collection points across the state.
“South Australia has had a scheme for decades so it boggles the mind why the NSW Government hasn’t learnt lessons from there.
“There obviously is price gouging going on which is undermining public support for the scheme. I have written to the Environment Minister asking her to take action to stop this immediately” she concluded.
