NSW Greens MP and Roads & Transport spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has responded to the report that by 2023 Sydney will have more toll roads than any other city in the world.
Dr. Faruqi said:
“The fact that Sydney alone will soon have more toll roads than the entire UK is abysmal and speaks to the complete lack of this Government’s understanding of what the future holds.
“While both the Minister and Shadow Minister for Transport have highlighted the need to step away from this 1950’s style of transport planning, they are still trying to have it both ways. Neither the Liberals nor Labor have the political gumption to end the toll road merry-go-round.
“Even after paying the toll through their noses, people have to sit in traffic jams as roads become more and more congested. Poor public transport options force people from the most disadvantaged areas to use expensive toll roads, filling the coffers of toll road companies because of the mistakes of this Government in transport planning.
“With concessions running for decades, and being extended on roads the public have already paid for – the injustice of this situation cannot be stressed enough.
“Globally, there’s a sensible trend of moving towards more efficient and affordable public transport solutions, and that’s what we need for Sydney, not more toll roads.
