Greens call for Funding for Domestic Violence Shelter in NSW Treasurers Own Electorate
Greens NSW MP and Spokesperson for the Status of Women, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, and Greens Councillor on Hawkesbury Council, Danielle Wheeler, have handed over more than a hundred postcards calling for better funding of signed by members of the community to the office of NSW Treasurer and member for Hawkesbury, Dominic Perrottet
These postcards were handed to Dr Faruqi as part of the Women’s Electoral Lobby ‘Keep the Lights On’ campaign for adequate funding for refuges. Dr Faruqi and Clr Wheeler are also calling for funding for the women’s refuge in the Treasurer’s own electorate to allow it to stay open on weekends, peak times for domestic violence incidents. Clr Wheeler will be speaking at Hawkesbury Domestic and Family Violence forum at Richmond on 16 May.
Dr Faruqi said:
“With the NSW Budget coming up, it is essential that the NSW Government provide additional funding for specialist women’s refuges to make sure that no one is turned away due to lack of funding.
“This year alone, 23 women across Australia have been killed due to domestic and family violence. We must do everything we can to end the violence through prevention and intervention programs as well as providing enough safe accommodation for women leaving violent situations. This means funding specialist women’s refuges to ‘keep the lights on’, ” she concluded.
Councillor Wheeler said:
“Here in the Treasurer’s own electorate, we have no emergency accommodation or after hours shelter for women fleeing domestic and family violence. On weekends, women have to travel to Penrith to seek safety. This is completely unacceptable.
“Council is doing everything it can to support these services, but it is time that the State Government stepped up and committed long term funding to domestic violence services in the Hawkesbury electorate” she concluded.
