NSW Greens MP and spokesperson for Animal Welfare, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has said that the report into the Keinbah Training Track (KTT) mass grave makes for chilling reading and lifts the lid on the greyhound racing industries’ dirty secret.
The report found that “Mr Thomas Pullman, a licenced trainer who was responsible for the day to day running of the KTT during the period 2009 to 2013, was responsible for killing and burying a substantial number of the 99 greyhounds located at the KTT for reasons other than emergency euthanasia. (b) Mr Pullman engaged in a systematic process of killing greyhounds that were not performing. (c) Ms Helen Pullman, Ms Kayla Spliet, Mr Corey Spliet and Mr Wayne Weiss were aware (to varying degrees) that Mr Pullman buried a substantial number of greyhounds at the KTT”
Dr. Faruqi said:
“The report makes chilling reading, including the systematic killing of dogs by blunt force and dumping their bodies in a mass grave.
“The mass killing of dogs who can’t run fast enough is the industry’s dirty secret. These ‘missing dogs’ were highlighted in the Special Commission of Inquiry so it is shameful that Labor, Liberal and Nationals not only overturned the ban, but the NSW Government is now rewarding the industry with millions of taxpayer dollars.
“The reality is that the industry encourages over breeding of dogs and the new animal welfare rules are a step forward but can be circumvented. As long as there is greyhound racing, there will be animal cruelty” she concluded.
