$500,000 in taxpayer funding of Greyhound Race An Absolute Disgrace
Greens NSW MP and Animal Welfare Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has reacted to news that the NSW Government will half fund a new $1 million dollar greyhound race.
Dr Faruqi said:
“It is honestly quite sickening that the NSW Government is rewarding the greyhound racing industry with hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ dollars when they have made zero effort to stop the killing of greyhounds once they cease earning a profit.
“Barely a week goes by without deaths on tracks, people being charged with severe animal cruelty and neglect or someone being pinged for doping their dog. The greyhound racing industry is behaving with impunity and the Liberal/National Government is rewarding this.
“In just the last two weeks, there have been seven deaths and 91 injuries on racing tracks. People would be horrified to know that their tax dollars are propping this gambling industry, rife with animal cruelty.
“Greyhound rescue charities are bursting at the seam with no Government assistance, but the Racing Minister has seen fit to give yet another public handout to the racing industry.
“The face that they have had to put a condition that participants must rehome their dogs after the race is indicative of how common it is for dogs to be euthanised once they are no longer useful to the racing industry.
“$500,000 of taxpayers money going towards a single race is a real slap in the face for communities out there desperate for the Government to invest in their schools and hospitals” she concluded.
